INCT Hormona is the National Institute of Science and Technology in Hormones and Women’s Health. Created by the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), it has conducted research in the field of endocrine and women’s reproductive health since 2009. Headquartered at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA), the premier teaching hospital of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, the Institute and has six other science, technology, and innovation development units located in academic centers across the five regions of Brazil. The Brazilian Study on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is one of the main instruments for nationwide institutional outreach operated by the Institute.
The impact of hormones on women’s health is a topic of strategic importance for public policy-making, involving critical issues at the various stages of women’s life course, such as sexual and reproductive health, family planning, protections for healthy aging, and prevention of diseases and other conditions associated with morbidity and mortality.
The objectives of INCT Hormona include consolidating a joint research, development, and training agenda which translates into real benefits for Brazilian society. From this perspective, the research projects pursued at the institute seek to screen, detect, prevent, and treat high-risk conditions pertaining to female endocrinology throughout the life course, from childhood to old age, observing and recognizing environmental, social, biological, and genetic factors that may be protective.
